A 36B bra has a 36-inch band and a B cup. Your bust measures about 2 inches more than your band, roughly 38 inches, and your underbust is just over 34 up to 36 inches.

What does 36B mean?
36 is the band and B is the cup. The band goes around your ribcage and gives most of the support. The cup letter describes the difference between your bust and band at about one inch per letter, so B means 2 inches.
Because the cup scales with the band, a 36B cup holds more than a 34B or 32B cup. The letter alone tells you very little. The bra size chart shows every combination.
Same bust, different size: 36B or 34D?
A 38-inch bust can be a 36B or a 34D, depending on your underbust. If your underbust is just over 34 to 36 inches, the band is 36 and the 2-inch difference gives B. If your underbust is just over 32 to 34 inches, the band is 34 and the 4-inch difference gives D.
This is why bust measurement alone can’t give you a bra size. It also explains a common refit: people who wore 36B for years with a riding band often measure 34C or 34D once the underbust is measured snugly. The calculator on our homepage handles this for you.
What measurements give you a 36B?
- Measure snugly around your ribs, directly under your bust, with the tape level. Round up to the next even number. Just over 34 up to 36 inches gives a 36 band.
- Measure loosely around the fullest part of your bust. Round to the nearest inch.
- Subtract: 38 − 36 = 2 inches, a B cup.
Our guide to measuring your bra size covers posture, tape position and the mistakes that throw the numbers off.
What are the sister sizes of 36B?
The sister sizes of 36B are 34C and 38A.
- 34C: same cup volume, tighter band. The most common switch from 36B.
- 38A: same cup volume, looser band. Only if a 36 band genuinely feels too tight on the loosest hook.
Use the sister size calculator to see the whole family. Our 34C bra size guide explains that size in detail.
How should a 36B fit?
- Band: level and firm on the loosest hook. If you can pull it more than about 2 inches away from your back, it’s too loose.
- Cups: smooth with no gaps or spillage.
- Center: lies flat on your breastbone in an underwired bra.
- Straps: gentle, not digging, and not slipping.
Loose bands are the most common fit problem at 36B, because a loose band feels comfortable in the fitting room. The bra fit checker can confirm whether the band is the issue.
Which bra styles suit a 36B?
Most styles come in 36B. These work especially well:
- T-shirt bras with molded cups give a smooth, rounded shape. See our T-shirt bra guide.
- Demi bras for lower necklines.
- Wireless and bralette styles for comfort, since a B cup needs less structure.
- Lightly lined bras add shape without much padding.
