A 36C bra has a 36-inch band and a C cup, so your bust is about 3 inches larger than your band, roughly 39 inches. Your underbust would be just over 34 up to 36 inches.

What does 36C mean?
The 36 is the band size, measured around your ribcage. The C is the cup size, which means a difference of about 3 inches between your bust and the band. Each letter is roughly one inch: A is 1, B is 2, C is 3, D is 4.
Cup volume grows with the band. A 36C cup is bigger than a 34C cup and smaller than a 38C cup. That’s why sister sizes work, and why “C cup” on its own doesn’t describe a size. See the full bra size chart for the pattern.
Is 36C the same as 34D?
36C and 34D are sister sizes. They hold roughly the same cup volume on different bands. The 34D band is 2 inches smaller around, so it sits tighter on your ribcage.
That matters because the band does most of the lifting. If your 36C rides up your back and you’re tightening the straps to compensate, a 34D usually feels more supportive with the same cups. If a 34D band leaves deep red marks on the loosest hook, stay with 36C. Our 34D bra size guide covers that size in detail.
What measurements give you a 36C?
A 36C comes from an underbust that rounds up to 36 and a bust 3 inches bigger. To check:
- Measure snugly around your ribcage under your bust. Round up to the next even number: just over 34 up to 36 inches gives a 36 band.
- Measure around the fullest part of your bust, relaxed and level. Round to the nearest inch.
- Subtract the band from the bust. 39 − 36 = 3 inches, which is a C cup.
If your underbust is 34 inches or less, our method gives you a 34 band, and probably a D cup for the same bust. The guide to measuring your bra size walks through each step.
What are the sister sizes of 36C?
The sister sizes of 36C are 34D and 38B.
- 34D: tighter band, same cups. The right move when the band is loose.
- 38B: looser band, same cups. Try it if a 36 band feels restrictive.
The sister size calculator lists every sister size in US, UK, EU, French or Australian labels.
How should a 36C fit?
A good 36C fit looks like this:
- Band: level, firm on the loosest hook, about two fingers of give.
- Cups: smooth and full with no overflow at the top or under the arms.
- Wires: resting on your ribcage, not on breast tissue.
- Straps: adjusted so they stay up without taking the weight.
Bands stretch with wear, so start on the loosest hook and move inward over the bra’s life. Our bra fit checker helps when something doesn’t sit right.
Which bra styles suit a 36C?
36C fits the full range of mainstream styles. A few worth knowing:
- Minimizer bras reduce how far the bust projects, which helps button-front shirts lie flat. Read what a minimizer bra does.
- Full-coverage T-shirt bras for smooth everyday wear.
- Balconette bras for lift under wider necklines.
- Wireless bras with a deep band for comfort without losing support.
