A 34D bra has a 34-inch band and a D cup, meaning your bust measures about 4 inches more than your band, roughly 38 inches. Under our method your underbust is just over 32 up to 34 inches.
| Band 34 | Underbust over 32 and up to 34 inches (81–86 cm). We round your underbust up to the next even number. |
|---|---|
| Cup D | Bust about 4 inches bigger than the band: roughly 37½ to 38½ inches (95–98 cm) around the fullest part. |
| Sister sizes | 32DD (tighter band) and 36C (looser band). Full diagonal: 28G (UK 28F), 30DDD (UK 30E), 32DD, 34D, 36C, 38B, 40A, 42AA. |

Is 34D big?
No, a 34D is a mid-range bra size. The “D cup means big” idea comes from older sizing habits, when bands were often measured loosely and cups stopped at DD in many stores. Today Wacoal lists cups up to I and Victoria’s Secret lists cups up to O. A D cup is four steps above AA, close to the middle of those ranges.
What a D cup “looks like” also depends on the band. A 30D holds about the same as a 34B, while a 38D holds much more. So 34D says something specific: a 34-inch band with a 4-inch difference.
What measurements give you a 34D?
- Measure snugly under your bust. Round up to the next even number. Just over 32 up to 34 inches gives a 34 band.
- Measure around the fullest part of your bust with a relaxed tape. Round to the nearest inch.
- Subtract: 38 − 34 = 4 inches, a D cup.
If your bust is 38 inches but your underbust is just over 34 to 36 inches, you’d get 36B instead. Same bust, different band. Our guide to measuring your bra size explains how to get both numbers right.
What are the sister sizes of 34D?
The sister sizes of 34D are 32DD and 36C.
- 32DD: same cups, tighter band. Try it if your 34D band rides up.
- 36C: same cups, looser band. Try it if the band is tight even on the loosest hook.
There’s a wider family on the same diagonal too, from 28G (UK 28F) up through 42AA. Our sister size calculator lists them all.
34D vs 34DD vs 34C
All three share the 34 band, so they feel the same around your ribs. Only the cup changes, by about an inch per step:
| Size | Bust (approx.) | Cup difference |
|---|---|---|
| 34C | 37 in | 3 in |
| 34D | 38 in | 4 in |
| 34DD | 39 in | 5 in |
If 34D cups wrinkle, try 34C. If you spill over the top edge, try 34DD.
How should a 34D fit?
- Band: level, firm on the loosest hook, two fingers of room.
- Cups: no overflow at the top or under the arms, no gaps.
- Wires: trace the crease under the breast and sit behind tissue at the sides.
- Center gore: touches your breastbone.
- Straps: don’t dig in. If they leave marks, the band is probably too loose.
