A 36D bra has a 36-inch band and a D cup, so your bust measures about 4 inches more than your band, roughly 40 inches. Your underbust is just over 34 up to 36 inches.

What does 36D mean?
36 is the band size and D is the cup. The band is your ribcage measurement under the bust, rounded up to an even number. The cup letter is the bust-to-band difference, about one inch per letter, so D means 4 inches.
A 36D cup holds more than a 34D and less than a 38D. It holds about the same as a 34DD or a 38C, which are its sister sizes. The bra size chart shows how this works across every band.
Is 36D a big size?
A 36D is a mid-to-full size, but it isn’t at the far end of any brand’s range. Wacoal lists cups up to I and bands up to 46, and Victoria’s Secret lists cups up to O. So 36D sits comfortably inside standard ranges, and you’ll find it in most stores.
What changes at this size is how much the build of a bra matters. Wider straps, a deeper band and three or more hooks all spread the load better than the light construction that works at A and B cups.
What measurements give you a 36D?
- Measure snugly around your ribcage under your bust. Round up to the next even number. Just over 34 up to 36 inches gives a 36 band.
- Measure around the fullest part of your bust, standing straight with the tape level. Round to the nearest inch.
- Subtract: 40 − 36 = 4 inches, a D cup.
The guide to measuring your bra size explains how to keep the tape level at the back.
What are the sister sizes of 36D?
The sister sizes of 36D are 34DD and 38C.
- 34DD: tighter band, same cups. Try it if the 36D band rides up or the straps dig in.
- 38C: looser band, same cups. Try it if a 36 band is tight on the loosest hook.
Our 34DD bra size guide covers the most common switch. The sister size calculator lists the rest.
How should a 36D fit?
- Band: firm, level, and on the loosest hook when new.
- Cups: fully contain your tissue with no overflow at the top or under the arms.
- Wires: sit behind your breast tissue at the sides. Wires that sit on tissue cause soreness by evening.
- Straps: snug, not digging. Deep strap grooves usually mean the band is too loose.
Our bra fit checker can pin down the cause if something hurts.
