Key takeaways

  • A T-shirt bra has smooth, usually molded cups with no visible seams, so it disappears under close-fitting tops.
  • Molded cups hold a fixed shape, so the cup shape has to match yours. A gap at the top is the most common problem.
  • T-shirt bras come in full, demi and plunge shapes, wired or wireless.
  • Skin-tone shades close to your own skin stay hidden under white and light tops better than white bras.

A T-shirt bra has smooth, seamless cups, usually made from thin molded foam, so it doesn’t show through close-fitting tops. Bravissimo describes T-shirt bras as having “moulded, seamfree cups for a smooth look under clothes”. Most people treat one as their everyday bra.

How does a T-shirt bra work?

The cups are formed by heat-molding a layer of foam into a rounded shape. That gives three things:

  • No seams that could show through thin fabric.
  • A smooth, rounded shape that looks consistent under clothes.
  • Light coverage, so nipples don’t show.

The foam is usually thin, which is why T-shirt bras are often called “lightly lined” or “contour”. They aren’t meant to add much lift. That’s a push-up bra’s job.

T-shirt bra shapes

T-shirt bras aren’t one cut. You’ll find:

If full-coverage molded cups gap at the top for you, a demi or plunge T-shirt bra usually fixes it.

The one fit problem to watch for

Molded cups keep their shape, so they don’t adapt to yours the way fabric cups do. That’s great when the shape matches and frustrating when it doesn’t. The most common problem is a gap at the top edge of the cup.

A top gap usually means one of three things:

  1. Your breasts are less full at the top than the cup shape. Try a demi or plunge cut.
  2. The cup is slightly too big. Try one cup smaller, keeping the same band.
  3. The band is too loose, so the cups tip forward. Try the tightest hook or a sister size with a smaller band.

If your breasts are fuller at the top, or quite different in size from each other, a seamed unlined bra may fit better.

How should a T-shirt bra fit?

  • Top edge: lies flat with no gap and no cutting in.
  • Cups: smooth with no dents, wrinkles or overflow.
  • Band: firm and level, on the loosest hook when new.
  • Wires: sit behind your breast tissue at the sides.
  • Center: lies against your breastbone.

What color T-shirt bra is most invisible?

A shade close to your own skin tone is the least visible under white and light tops. Bright white bras often show through white fabric more than skin-tone ones. Our guide on what bra to wear under a white shirt explains why.

Looking after T-shirt bras

Molded cups dent if you fold one cup into the other. Store them flat or stacked, cups nested. Brastop recommends washing bras about every three to four wears, in warm (not hot) water, and never storing padded bras with one cup inverted. See our guide on how to wash bras.

Frequently asked questions

What is a T-shirt bra?

A T-shirt bra has smooth, seamless cups, usually molded foam, designed to look invisible under close-fitting tops like T-shirts and knits.

Is a T-shirt bra padded?

Most have a thin layer of molded foam, often called lightly lined or contour. That foam smooths the shape rather than adding lift.

Why does my T-shirt bra gap at the top?

Molded cups keep a fixed shape. If your breasts are less full at the top than the cup, it stands away. Try a demi or plunge T-shirt bra, or a smaller cup.

Can you wear a T-shirt bra every day?

Yes. T-shirt bras are designed as everyday bras. Rotate two or three so each one gets a rest between wears.
