A push-up bra has angled padding that is thicker at the bottom and outer edge of each cup. That padding sits under and beside your breasts and pushes them up and toward the center, for more lift and cleavage than a standard bra. Marks & Spencer sums it up as “enhanced lift for a fuller, more defined shape”.
How does a push-up bra work?
The trick is where the padding sits. In a regular padded bra, foam is spread evenly across the cup. In a push-up bra it’s graduated: thicker low and to the outside, and thin or absent near the top and center. When you put it on, that wedge of padding takes up space under your breast, so your tissue moves upward and inward.
Push-ups come in different strengths:
- Light lift: thin graduated foam for a natural look.
- Medium lift: thicker lower padding for visible cleavage.
- Maximum lift (sometimes called “super push-up” or “double push-up”): the thickest pads, often with removable inserts.
Push-up vs padded vs plunge
| Style | What defines it | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Push-up | Angled padding, thickest low and outside | Lift and cleavage |
| Padded | Even padding across the cup | Smooth shape, modesty |
| Plunge | Low, narrow center gore | Hidden under V-necks |
Many bras combine features. A “plunge push-up” has both the low center and the angled padding. Our plunge bra guide explains the center shape.
Who are push-up bras for?
Anyone who wants more lift or fullness under a particular outfit. They’re popular with smaller cup sizes for adding shape (our A cup guide covers this), and with all sizes for low necklines and special occasions. At larger cup sizes, push-up styles exist, but the padding is usually lighter because the breast already fills the cup.
How should a push-up bra fit?
Push-ups follow the same basic fit rules as any bra:
- Band: firm and level. The padding doesn’t change how the band should fit.
- Wires: sit behind your breast tissue at the sides.
- Center gore: touches your breastbone.
- Top edge: no spilling. Push-ups lift tissue up, so check you aren’t overflowing the top.
- Comfort: no pressure points from the padding.
If you spill over the top, the cup may be too small for the amount of padding. Try a lighter push-up before changing size. Our bra fit checker can help.
Do you need a different size?
Start with your normal size. Heavily padded push-ups take up cup space, so a few people find they need one cup smaller in those styles. Others find the push-up overflows and need one bigger. Only change one thing at a time, and keep the band size that fits.
What to wear with a push-up bra
- Low-cut and V-neck tops (choose a plunge push-up).
- Square and sweetheart necklines.
- Fitted dresses where you want a lifted shape.
For a smooth, natural shape under everyday tops, a T-shirt bra is usually more comfortable.
