An A cup means your bust measures about 1 inch more than your band. It’s the first full cup step: A is 1 inch, B is 2, C is 3. The band number changes how much an A cup actually holds.
What is an A cup?
An A cup is a cup letter, not a fixed breast size. The letter only describes the gap between two measurements: your underbust (which sets the band) and your bust (around the fullest part). A gap of about one inch gives an A.
That’s why “I’m an A cup” means different things on different people. On a 30 band, an A cup holds very little. On a 38 band, it holds about the same as a 34C.
How do A cups compare across bands?
A cups grow with the band. This table shows approximate measurements under our method and the sister sizes that share each cup volume:
| Size | Underbust | Bust (approx.) | Same cup volume as |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30A | over 28 up to 30 in | 31 in | 28B |
| 32A | over 30 up to 32 in | 33 in | 30B, 28C |
| 34A | over 32 up to 34 in | 35 in | 32B, 30C, 28D |
| 36A | over 34 up to 36 in | 37 in | 34B, 32C, 30D |
| 38A | over 36 up to 38 in | 39 in | 36B, 34C, 32D |

A cup vs AA cup
AA is the cup below A. It covers a bust that measures less than an inch over the band. Fewer brands make AA. ThirdLove lists cups from AA, and Victoria’s Secret’s international chart starts at AA, but many stores begin at A.
Before you go down to AA, check the band. A band that’s too loose makes any cup look too big, because the cups tip away from your body. Our calculator flags results below an A cup instead of guessing, since an underbust measured loosely can push you there by mistake.
How do you know if you’re an A cup?
- Measure snugly around your ribcage under your bust. Round up to the next even number for your band.
- Measure around the fullest part of your bust. Round to the nearest inch.
- Subtract the band from the bust. 1 inch is an A cup.
Keep the tape relaxed around the fullest point. Some retailers suggest leaning forward slightly to find it, which can help with soft or wide-set tissue. Our guide to measuring your bra size has the details.
Why do A cup bras gape?
A cup bras gape when the cup shape doesn’t match yours, not usually because the cup is too big. Small cups with tall, full-coverage shapes leave fabric standing away at the top. Try these fixes in order:
- Tighten the band or try the sister size one band down (34A → 32B).
- Pick a lower cup: demi, balconette or plunge cuts have less fabric to gape.
- Choose light lining: a thin molded cup holds its shape instead of wrinkling.
- Scoop and settle: lean forward and bring tissue from under your arm into the cup.
Which bra styles suit A cups?
- Push-up bras add lift and fullness with angled padding. Read what a push-up bra does.
- Bralettes and unlined bras are comfortable because small cups need little structure.
- Plunge bras suit open necklines and gape less.
- Lightly lined T-shirt bras give a smooth, rounded look.
