A shelf bra is a built-in bra inside a top. It’s usually an elastic band under the bust plus a layer of lining fabric, sewn into a tank top, camisole, swimsuit or dress. It gives light support and coverage, so you can wear the top without a separate bra.
How does a shelf bra work?
The “shelf” is the elastic band that runs around your ribcage under your bust. It holds the lining close to your body and creates a light lift from underneath, a bit like a shelf. Most shelf bras have:
- An elastic underband, sometimes wide and soft, sometimes a narrow strip.
- A front lining, often a second layer of the same fabric.
- No cups, wires or hooks in most cases. Some have pockets for removable pads.
Because the band is part of the top, its size is set by the top’s size (S, M, L), not by your band measurement.
How much support does a shelf bra give?
Light support. A shelf bra holds your bust close to your body and reduces movement a little. It doesn’t separate or lift like a fitted bra, and the band is usually looser than a bra band.
In practice:
- Smaller busts often find a shelf bra enough for everyday wear.
- Mid cup sizes may find it comfortable for lounging but not all day.
- Fuller busts usually need a separate bra for real support, or a top with a firmer built-in band.

Who are shelf bras good for?
- Smaller busts who want a one-piece outfit with light coverage.
- Lounging and sleeping, where comfort matters more than lift. Cleveland Clinic suggests a shelf bra or camisole as an option if you like to wear something to bed. See our guide to sleeping in a bra.
- Layering under cardigans, shirts and jackets.
- Warm weather, when a separate bra feels like too much.
What to look for in a shelf bra top
- A wide, firm underband. Narrow elastic tends to roll up or slip.
- Removable pads if you want more coverage or shape.
- Adjustable straps so you can set the height of the shelf.
- The right size by bust and underbust, using the brand’s chart rather than your dress size alone.
- Breathable fabric such as cotton or modal for sleep and hot days.
