A jelly bra is a wireless, usually seamless bra that uses flexible, gel-like strips instead of underwires. The “jelly” strips sit under or around the cups to help them hold their shape and add a little lift, without anything rigid against your ribs.
How does a jelly bra work?
In a standard underwired bra, a metal or plastic wire runs under each cup to hold the shape and anchor the bra against your ribcage. A jelly bra replaces that with soft, bendy strips made from a gel-like material, usually sewn into the band or the lower edge of the cups.
Product listings describe the strips in different shapes, often a “W” or U that runs under both cups. The idea is a smooth shape with no wire pressure. Most jelly bras are:
- Wireless, with no metal or rigid plastic.
- Seamless, knitted or bonded, for a smooth look under fitted tops.
- Pullover or hook-back, with removable pads in many cases.
- Sized S to XXL rather than band and cup.
Are jelly bras supportive?
Jelly bras give light to medium support. The strips help the cups keep their shape, but they can’t anchor and separate the breasts the way a well-fitted underwire does. In practice:
- Smaller to mid cup sizes often find them comfortable and supportive enough for everyday wear.
- Fuller busts usually find the band and strips aren’t firm enough for all-day lift.
- Exercise calls for a sports bra instead.
Bravissimo describes non-wired styles in general as offering a “soft fit and natural shape”. That’s a fair way to think about jelly bras: comfort first, structure second.

How to choose a jelly bra size
Because jelly bras use S/M/L sizing, the label tells you less than a band-and-cup size would. To choose well:
- Measure your underbust and bust in inches. Our guide to measuring your bra size explains how.
- Compare both numbers with the brand’s own chart. Charts vary a lot between sellers.
- Size by the band if you fall between sizes. A band that’s too loose won’t stay level.
- Check the return policy before ordering, since fit varies more than with traditional sizing.
How should a jelly bra fit?
- Band: sits level and snug without rolling up.
- Cups: smooth, with no spillage at the top or sides.
- Strips: lie flat against your ribs without poking or twisting.
- Straps: stay on your shoulders.
How to care for a jelly bra
Follow the care label first. As a general rule, wash bras in warm (not hot) water with a mild detergent and let them air dry. Heat from a tumble dryer can weaken elastic and may deform the strips. Our guide on how to wash bras covers the details.
