A front closure bra fastens between the cups instead of at the back. You can put it on and take it off without reaching behind you, which makes it easier for anyone with stiff shoulders, arthritis or limited reach. Bravissimo describes front-fastening bras as “easy to put on and take off”.
How does a front closure bra work?
Instead of hook-and-eye tapes at the back, the bra has a fastening at the center front. Common types:
- Plastic or metal clasps that slot together and click shut.
- Hook-and-eye panels at the front, sometimes in two or three rows.
- Zips, mostly on sports and post-surgery styles.
The back is a single piece of band, usually smooth and sometimes racerback.
Who are front closure bras good for?
- Older adults and anyone with limited shoulder movement. Fastening at the front avoids twisting your arms behind your back.
- People with arthritis or weak grip, since a large front clasp can be easier than small back hooks.
- Anyone who finds back hooks fiddly, including after shoulder injuries.
- People who want a smooth back under fitted tops, or a racerback shape.

The trade-off: band adjustability
Most back-fastening bras have two to four rows of hooks, so you can tighten the band as the elastic stretches. Most front closures have one setting. That means:
- The band has to fit exactly when new. Measure carefully with our guide to measuring your bra size.
- The bra loses support sooner as the band stretches, because you can’t move to a tighter hook.
- Some styles add an adjustable back, or front hooks with several rows. They’re worth looking for.
Are front closure bras supportive?
They can be. Front closure bras come wired and wireless, molded and seamed, and in sizes well past DD. Support still comes from a firm band, well-fitting cups and wires. The closure is just where it fastens. The risk is that the single-setting band ends up too loose, so prioritize band fit.
How to put on a front closure bra
- Put your arms through the straps like a jacket.
- Lean forward slightly and let your breasts settle into the cups.
- Fasten the clasp at the center, checking it clicks or hooks fully.
- Stand up, then adjust the straps so they’re snug but not digging.
Our guide on how to put on a bra explains the lean-forward method in more detail.
What to look for in a front closure bra
- Your true band size, firm on the only setting.
- An easy-to-grip clasp, if reach or grip is the reason you’re buying one.
- Wide, adjustable straps that stay on your shoulders.
- Racerback or posture styles if straps slipping is a problem.
- Underwire or a deep wireless band, depending on how much support you need.
