The best bras for older women combine comfort, support and easy dressing: a firm band, soft breathable fabrics, wide padded straps, and often a front closure so you don’t have to reach behind your back. Above all, the bra has to fit your current size, which may have changed since you last measured.
Re-measure first
Breast size and shape often change over the years, with weight changes, hormonal shifts such as menopause, and tissue becoming softer. The size you’ve worn for a decade may not be the one that fits now. Signs it’s time to re-measure:
- The band rides up at the back.
- Straps dig in or slip off.
- Cups wrinkle at the top or tissue spills at the sides.
- Wires sit on breast tissue instead of your ribcage.
Our guide to measuring your bra size shows how, and the calculator on our homepage turns the numbers into a starting size.
Features that make bras easier to wear
| Feature | Why it helps |
|---|---|
| Front closure | No reaching behind your back |
| Large, easy-grip clasps or hooks | Easier with arthritis or weak grip |
| Wide, padded straps | Spread pressure on shoulders |
| Soft, breathable fabric (cotton, modal) | Gentler on sensitive skin |
| Flat seams, no scratchy tags | Fewer irritation points |
| Wireless option with deep band | Comfort without wires, still supportive |
| Stretch-back or adjustable straps | Easier to adjust once it’s on |

Support that suits softer tissue
As tissue softens, the bra has to do more lifting. Look for:
- A firm band that stays level. Wacoal says the band provides 70% of a bra’s support.
- Seamed cups that lift and shape better than thin stretch fabric.
- Side support panels that bring tissue forward.
- Full coverage that holds everything securely.

Underwire or wireless?
Both work. Underwires give the most lift and separation, if they fit well and sit on your ribcage. Wireless bras are more comfortable for many people, but they need a deep, firm band and seamed or molded cups to give real support. If you’ve avoided underwire because it dug in, the size may have been the problem. A well-fitted underwire shouldn’t hurt.

Make bras last
Hand wash in warm, not hot, water and air dry. Brastop suggests replacing a well-fitting bra roughly every six to twelve months, and once the band is loose on the tightest hook.
