A longline bra has a deeper band that extends down your ribcage, anywhere from a couple of inches to nearly your waist. The extra band spreads support over more of your torso and smooths the area under the bust. Longline styles come in everyday, bralette, sports and strapless versions.
What a longline bra does
- Spreads support. Wacoal says the band does about 70% of the work in a regular bra. A deeper band shares that load over more area.
- Smooths the midriff. The band lies flat under fitted tops and dresses.
- Holds strapless styles up. A longline strapless has more band to grip with than a standard strapless.
- Shows on purpose. Lace and bralette longlines are often worn peeking under open shirts or as a top.

Longline vs bustier vs corset bra
A longline bra is an everyday bra with a deeper band. A bustier is longer and more structured, often with boning, and ends near the waist. A corset bra goes further with heavy boning and shaping. Our guide to the corset bra compares them.
How to fit a longline bra
- Band: firm and flat. Sit down and bend forward. If it rolls up from the bottom, try a smaller band or a shorter longline.
- Length: the bottom edge should sit on your ribs, not on your waist where you bend.
- Boning: side boning keeps the band upright, especially in strapless styles.
- Cups: fit them as you would any bra. No gaps or spilling.
If you have a short torso, look for “midline” styles with a shorter band extension.
