The most supportive bra for a halter top is a convertible bra worn in halter mode: unclip the straps and hook them together behind your neck. If the back of the top covers where a band sits, a strapless bra also works. For open-back halters, you’ll need an adhesive bra, a low-back bra or built-in cups.
Your options at a glance
| Halter type | Best bra |
|---|---|
| Halter with a covered back | Convertible bra in halter mode, or strapless |
| Racer-cut halter (cuts in sharply at the front) | Racerback bra, or convertible worn crisscross |
| Open-back halter | Adhesive bra, low-back bra or converter |
| Deep V halter | Plunge convertible bra, or adhesive bra |
| Halter with built-in cups | No separate bra needed |
Option 1: convertible bra worn halter
Convertible (multiway) bras have straps that unclip from the cups. To wear one as a halter:
- Unclip both straps from the back of the band.
- Bring them up and around the back of your neck.
- Clip them together, or clip each strap to the opposite cup.
- Adjust the length so the cups sit where they normally would.
This gives you nearly the support of a regular bra, because the band stays in place. Make sure the band is firm. Brand fit guides say straps should carry only a small share of the weight. Victoria’s Secret puts it at “no more than 10%”. A loose band shifts that weight onto your neck.
Option 2: strapless bra
If the halter covers your back where a bra band sits, a strapless bra hides completely. Choose one with silicone grip and a firm band. Our guides to the best strapless bras and how to make a bra strapless cover the details.
Option 3: racerback bras for racer halters
Some halters cut in sharply from the neck to under the arm. A racerback bra, with straps that meet between your shoulder blades, often hides under these better than a halter strap. Many sports bras and some everyday bras come in racerback styles.
Option 4: open-back halters
When the back of the halter is open, a band would show. Choose:
- An adhesive bra for a fully open back. Wash it after every wear; see how to clean a sticky bra.
- A low-back bra or converter if the opening ends at mid-back.
- Built-in cups sewn into the top or dress.
Our guide to choosing a bra for a backless dress goes through each option.
Halter tops with a fuller bust
Halters can be tricky at larger cup sizes, since there’s no shoulder strap to share the load. For more support:
- Use a convertible bra with a firm band, so the band, not your neck, does the lifting.
- Choose halter tops with built-in shelf or cups and a wide under-bust band.
- Try a deep-V halter with a plunge bra in convertible style.
- Pick wide halter straps that spread pressure on your neck.
