The right bra for a backless dress depends on how low the back goes. For a mid-back cut, a low-back bra or a low-back converter hides the band below the opening. For a fully open back, an adhesive bra or cups sewn into the dress are the usual answer.
Match the bra to the back of the dress
| How low the back goes | Best options |
|---|---|
| Just below the shoulder blades | Strapless bra, convertible bra worn crossover or halter |
| Mid-back | Low-back bra, low-back converter |
| Waist or lower | Adhesive bra, built-in cups, nipple covers |
| Open sides as well | Adhesive bra or built-in cups |
Option 1: adhesive (sticky) bras
Best for: fully open backs, open sides, plunging necklines.
An adhesive bra sticks directly to your skin, usually with a clasp or tie in the center. Nothing sits on your back at all. They give coverage and some lift, but much less support than a banded bra, because there’s no band to hold the weight.
Tips:
- Apply to clean, dry skin with no lotion, oil or deodorant.
- Test it at home for a few hours before the event.
- Wash it after wearing to keep it sticky. Our guide on how to clean a sticky bra explains how.
Option 2: low-back bras and converters
Best for: dresses that dip to mid-back or just above the waist.
- Low-back bras have a band that wraps down and around your waist instead of straight across your back.
- Low-back converters are straps that hook onto your existing bra and pull the band down to waist level.
These give more support than adhesive bras because there’s still a band. Check the dress in a mirror from behind to make sure the converter sits below the opening.
Option 3: built-in support
Best for: fuller busts and long events.
Sewing bra cups into the dress, or choosing a dress with built-in boning and cups, gives you support with nothing visible. A tailor can add cups to most dresses. This is often the most comfortable choice for D cups and up, where adhesive bras struggle to support the weight.
Option 4: strapless and convertible bras
Best for: backs that open below the shoulders but not much lower.
A strapless bra’s band can sit low enough to hide under some backless styles. A convertible bra worn as a halter or crisscross can work if the dress has a halter neck. See our guides on how to make a bra strapless and the best strapless bras.
Option 5: nipple covers or nothing at all
If you don’t need support, nipple covers or silicone petals give coverage with nothing to show. Going braless is fine too, if you’re comfortable.
Backless dresses with a fuller bust
Adhesive bras work best for smaller busts. For larger cups, try:
- Cups sewn into the dress, ideally with some boning.
- A low-back longline bra that sits under a waist-height opening.
- A plunge low-back bodysuit, if the dress shape allows.
- Lift tape under an adhesive bra, tested well before the day.
