Key takeaways

  • High impact means the bra is built for running, jumping, HIIT, horse riding and other activities with a lot of bounce.
  • Look for a wide firm band, low-stretch straps, cups that separate and hold each breast, and adjustable fastenings.
  • Fit is part of the support: a high-impact bra in the wrong size behaves like a low-impact one.
  • Replace it when the band feels loose on the tightest setting or you notice more movement than before.

A high-impact sports bra is built for running, jumping, HIIT, dance cardio and horse riding: anything with a lot of bounce. The best ones combine a wide firm band, low-stretch straps, cups that hold each breast separately and adjustable fastenings. Bravissimo calls a supportive sports bra essential for these activities.

What makes a sports bra high impact?

FeatureWhy it matters
Wide, firm bandAnchors the bra so it doesn’t ride up as you move
Low-stretch strapsStop the cups bouncing up and down
Encapsulation (separate cups)Controls each breast instead of pressing both together
Compression layerAdds extra hold, especially for smaller cups
Adjustable band and strapsLets you keep the fit firm as the fabric relaxes
Moisture-wicking fabricStays light when you sweat

The University of Portsmouth’s breast health researchers have studied sports bras for years and found that a small set of design features accounts for a large share of performance. Fit matters too: in an Australian study of 104 women, McGhee and Steele (2010) found 85% were wearing an ill-fitting bra.

Compression vs encapsulation

  • Compression holds your breasts against your chest. Simple and comfortable for small to mid cups.
  • Encapsulation has separate cups, often with wires or molded foam. It controls movement better for fuller busts and gives a separated shape.
  • Combination bras do both and are the most common high-impact design.

How to fit a high-impact sports bra

  1. Band: firmer than your everyday bra, level all round, and it stays down when you lift your arms.
  2. Cups: hold everything with no spilling at the top, sides or bottom.
  3. Straps: snug, with no slack when you jump.
  4. Movement test: jump, jog on the spot and do high knees. Bravissimo suggests doing exactly this in the fitting room.

Sports bras often use different sizing from everyday bras. Our sports bra size chart explains S/M/L conversions, and how should a sports bra fit has the full checklist.

High-impact sports bras by bust size

  • A to C cups: a compression or combination racerback usually does the job.
  • D to DD cups: choose encapsulation with adjustable straps and a hook-and-eye band.
  • DDD and up: an underwired or molded-cup bra with a deep band. See our sports bras for large breasts guide.

Running, jumping rope, HIIT and boot camp classes, dance cardio, tennis, basketball, volleyball and horse riding all need a high-impact bra. Yoga, Pilates and walking usually don’t. Our guide to sports bra impact levels explains where each activity falls.

Frequently asked questions

What is a high-impact sports bra?

A sports bra designed to limit breast movement during activities with a lot of bounce, such as running, jumping, dance cardio and horse riding. It usually has a firmer band, less stretchy fabric and more structure than a medium- or low-impact bra.

Do small busts need a high-impact sports bra?

For running and jumping, yes. Smaller breasts still move during high-impact exercise. A compression-style high-impact bra is often enough for A to C cups.

Are high-impact sports bras supposed to be tight?

Firm, but not painful. You should be able to take a full, deep breath. If the band leaves deep marks or you feel short of breath, go up a band size and down a cup.

Is an underwire sports bra better for high impact?

For many people from a D cup up, yes. The wire anchors each cup so the bra can stop side-to-side movement as well as bounce.
