You can get fitted for a bra at department store lingerie sections, brand stores and independent lingerie boutiques, and many fit for free. Independent boutiques usually stock the widest range of sizes, especially small bands with big cups. Call ahead to ask whether you need an appointment, then bring a fitted T-shirt to check the result.
Your options
| Where | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Independent lingerie boutique | Widest size range, experienced fitters | Higher prices, appointments often needed |
| Department store lingerie section | Many brands in one place | Range of bands and cups may stop at common sizes |
| Brand store | Knows its own sizing well | Fits you to that brand’s range |
| Virtual or video fitting | Convenient, private | The fitter can’t feel the band |
| Online size quiz | A quick starting point | Only as good as the questions |
What happens at a fitting
A good fitter does more than measure. In a University of Portsmouth study, the traditional tape measurement overestimated band size and underestimated cup size compared with fit checks on the body, so experienced fitters rely on how bras actually sit on you. Expect them to:
- Ask what you wear now and what you need the bra for.
- Bring several sizes and styles to try.
- Check the band (firm and level), cups (no gaps or spilling), center (flat) and straps (snug, not digging).
- Suggest sister sizes or different shapes if something is off.
How to prepare
- Wear your best-fitting unpadded bra, so the fitter can see where you are now.
- Bring a thin, fitted T-shirt to see how each bra looks under clothes.
- Know your budget and needs: everyday, sports, strapless, nursing.
- Go when you’re comfortable. If you’re premenstrual and swollen, the size may be different a week later.
Prefer to do it at home?
You can measure yourself with a tape and our bra size calculator, or even without a tape using our guide to measuring your bra size without a tape measure. Then use the fit checker to judge the result.
After the fitting
Wear the new bra at home for an hour before cutting tags. Raise your arms, sit, bend and twist. If the band rides up, the cups gape or the wires dig in, return it and try the next size. Our guides on whether your bra is too small and whether it’s too big list the signs.
