Bra Sizes S, M, L and XL: What They Mean

How letter bra sizes (XS, S, M, L, XL) relate to band and cup sizes, why every brand differs, and how to choose a size when you are between letters.

Key takeaways

  • Letter sizes (XS to XXL) are used for bralettes, sports bras, sleep bras and built-in bra tops, not for structured underwire bras.
  • There is no standard conversion. Most brands step up roughly one band size per letter, and each letter covers a few cup sizes.
  • Use the brand’s own chart and check both your underbust and bust measurements.
  • If you are between sizes, size by your band for support and by your bust for coverage.

Letter bra sizes (XS, S, M, L, XL) are not a standard conversion from band and cup sizes. At most brands, each letter steps up roughly one band size and covers a few cup sizes: a medium is often near a 34 band with B to D cups. But brands draw the lines differently, so always use the brand’s own chart with both your underbust and bust measurements.

Where you’ll see letter sizes

  • Bralettes and soft wireless bras
  • Sports bras, especially compression styles
  • Sleep and lounge bras
  • Tank tops and dresses with built-in bras

Structured underwire bras almost always use band and cup sizes, because the wire has to match your breast’s width.

XS30 to 32A to B
S32 to 34A to C
M34 to 36B to D
L36 to 38B to DD
XL38 to 40C to DD
XXL40 to 42C to DDD

This is only a rough guide to how letter charts tend to look. Some brands size by band only, some by bust only, and some list cup ranges for each letter. Two brands can put a 34C in different letters.

How to choose your letter size

  1. Measure snugly under your bust and loosely around the fullest part. Our bra size calculator gives you a band and cup.
  2. Find the brand’s chart and check where your underbust and your bust each fall.
  3. If they agree, you’re done.
  4. If they don’t, decide what matters more for this bra:
    • Support (sports bras): go with your band.
    • Coverage and comfort (bralettes): go with your bust.

If your band is small and your cups are big, letter sizes often fail you: the cups are too small in your band’s letter, and the band is too loose in your cups’ letter. A brand that sizes by band and cup will fit better. Our sports bra size chart explains how sports brands handle this.

Frequently asked questions

What bra size is a medium?

At many brands, a medium covers a band of about 34 and cups from roughly B to D, but this varies a lot. Always check the brand’s chart.

What bra size is a large?

Often around a 36 band with B to D cups, though some brands put DD cups or 38 bands in large. Check both band and bust ranges on the chart.

What size is XL in bras?

Typically around a 38 to 40 band. Fuller cups on a smaller band may also need an XL at brands that size by bust.

Should I size up or down in a letter-size bra?

Size by your band if you want support (sports bras), and by your bust if the cups or coverage feel too small (bralettes). If the band is loose and the cups are tight, look for a brand that sizes by band and cup instead.
