Bra Extenders: When They Help and How to Use One

What a bra extender does, when it helps (and when you need a new size instead), how to match hook count and spacing, and bra extenders to consider.

Key takeaways

  • A bra extender adds length to your band so a bra that is a little tight around the ribs fits more comfortably.
  • Match the extender to your bra: same number of hooks (rows) and the same hook spacing.
  • It is a short-term fix for a tight band, bloating, pregnancy or recovery. If you always need it, try a bigger band.
  • When you go up a band, go down a cup to keep the same cup volume (34D to 36C).

A bra extender is a short strip with hooks and eyes that clips onto your bra band to make it longer. It’s a quick fix when a band feels a little tight: after a big meal, during pregnancy, after surgery or while you wait for a new bra. Match it to your bra’s number of hook rows and hook spacing. If you need one every day, a bigger band size is the better answer.

When a bra extender helps

  • A new bra that’s slightly snug on the loosest hook.
  • Pregnancy, when your ribcage expands before you switch to nursing bras.
  • Bloating or weight changes that come and go.
  • Recovery after illness or surgery, when pressure on the ribs is uncomfortable.
  • A dryer-shrunk band that used to fit.

When it doesn’t

An extender only changes the band. If the cups are also too small (spilling over the top, wires sitting on breast tissue), you need a different size. See how to know if your bra is too small.

How to choose the right extender

How we chose these

We matched each product’s listed construction (cup shape, band, straps, wires and fabric) to what helps with tight bra bands, and favored long-running Amazon listings with a large number of buyer reviews and a wide size range. We haven’t tested these bras ourselves, so use the fit checks in this guide when yours arrives, and keep the tags on until you’re sure. How we earn from links.

How to put on a bra extender

  1. Hook the extender’s hooks into your bra’s eyes (on the loosest setting).
  2. Fasten your bra’s hooks into the extender’s eyes.
  3. Check the band is still level and doesn’t ride up at the back.

Extender or bigger band?

If you reach for the extender every day, try a bigger band. Go up one band and down one cup to keep the same cup volume: 34D becomes 36C. That’s your sister size, and our sister size calculator lists them all. For bands that are too loose instead, see how to make a bra band tighter.

Frequently asked questions

Do bra extenders work?

Yes, for a band that is slightly too tight. They add an inch or two of length. They do not change the cups, so if the cups are also too small you need a different size.

How do I pick the right bra extender?

Count the rows of hooks on your bra (one, two, three or more) and match it. Hook spacing also varies a little between brands, so packs with several widths are useful.

Do bra extenders make the bra less supportive?

A little, because the extender is softer than the band and moves the hooks further back. Most people don’t notice for everyday wear, but for high-impact sports a correctly sized band is better.

When should I buy a bigger band instead?

If you use the extender every day, or the band feels tight even on the loosest hook with the extender, buy a bigger band and one cup size smaller.
